Welcome to the Inaugural Michael Hanly 5K. Michael Hanly was a sanitation worker assigned to BK11 in Caesar’s Bay, Brooklyn in the late 1990s. While performing his regular duties, a bag containing hazardous chemicals exploded on his truck. Michael inhaled the chemicals and later passed away. Following his death, Superintendent Saporito created a memorial race in Michael’s honor and in remembrance of other fallen DSNY members who suffered similar tragedies.
